University social responsibility (USR) is a comprehensive management policy of the university in all its processes, which evolves in the new context of globalization, innovation and the knowledge economy. Faced with the challenges posed by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, this article analyzes the RSU of universities in the face of these twin crises. The qualitative methodology of social research and documentary analysis was applied. In addition to their substantive functions (teaching, research and extension), universities also need to consolidate their internal links and with their environment, to carry out RSU as an ethical quality policy through responsible educational, labor and environmental management to promote sustainable development. Two priority areas of USR are explored in more detail: environmental education and communication, and the consolidation of a green campus. We believe that USR also has to focus on inequities associated with poverty or gender, as well as the voice of the most vulnerable social groups. In addition, we propose to refocus RSU efforts in the face of the important current challenges of the society, and also include the commitment within the university planning in its mission, vision and economic, social and environmental strategies.
